“Green & Natural”: Her Side…

I have been on this journey of “Natural” most of my life.  My husband Joe sometime refers to me as his “Second Generation Hippy” wife.  I contribute this to my up bringing.  As a part of my childhood we had chickens, rabbits, cows, pigs and Mom had a huge garden and green houses.  We raised the animals to eat, to share with the extended family.  That was just growing up.

But then I grew up and moved away from home to go to college.  Fast Food, up late, definetly not looking after myself.  But that all changed in 2002, when my husband and I found out we were pregnant.  Exciting, yes.  Scary, yes.  Life Changing, Definetly…  I think the next day I went through all the cupboards and fridge and threw out all the crap.  I started buying more local produce, at the time we were living in Kamloops, BC, so that was quite easy to do.  Than I began to notice what I was putting on my body, I started to read ingredients, Aluminum in deodrant?!?  What was I thinking putting that kind of stuff by the milk makers!!  I switched to a natural brand right away.  I know, I know I had already been putting it there for  26 years….but in my mind it seemed like the right thing to do.  When it came to the baby, Aidan, we used cloth diapers, natural remedies and lotions.  I made all his food except for the cereals, but they were organic.

We then made a move to Red Deer Alberta.  Organic and natural products were a little bit harder to find so that is when my Mom and I formed a food group to buy case lot natural  and organic foods from.  That helped.  We had our second son, Kade, and then moved again to a small town in Central Alberta, Hinton,  10,000 people. Oh my, most had the misconception of the benefits of natural products to expensive, whats the difference…  When we first moved to town, I truly thought that because we were in the middle of no where we were getting the bottom of the barrel for all of our produce.  It was such a shame.  I have noticed in the past 4 years that things are turning around. We actually have an organic section in our produce section and the major chain store now has its own line of organic products.   Yes excitment!

This journey will not stop here, now my goal is to introduce greener products not only to Hinton, but to everyday people who think that organic products are expensive, that there is no difference, that the laws will be changed to have our products “greener”.  I feel that this “green revolution” has to happen at the grassroots level!  Individuals have to make the choice of conventional products or the natural earth friendly products.  So please join my family in the “Green Revolution” , each person does and will make a difference!

Cheers Jorleen
