The Challenges Of Starting A New “GREEN” Business
My wife once said she would never go into business with me again, but here we are starting a second business. I read once the best time to start a business was during a recession, we are about to see how much truth their is in it. We have been living in a small town in the Canadian Rockies for a few years now and it has been challenging to find the natural & organic products we have had a custom too. It was next to impossible to find the brands we were looking for locally, and the products we did find were so overly priced, it was hard to fit them all into the budget. For us driving 3 hours to the closest big city was just not practical to find what we were missing. We had started ordering some products through buying groups, but most of the products had to come in bulk. We looked around on the Internet, but most places we found didn’t cary everything we were looking for, they mostly specialized in certain products.
One morning it came to me “Good 4 You And Planet 2″ a place to buy all the products we were looking for and more! My wife was thrilled, a place we can have healthy products, natural products, eco-friendly and planet safe products, their is no limit to the possibilities. But were do you start? Sure I know all the basics for start up, I already operate a successful business, but how do you promote a new natural shop in a small “Red Neck” town? Sure we know a lot of people who are interested in these kinds of products, but is their enough to make this store viable? With our other business down 30% due to the economic slow down, the budget for starting a second store would be tight. We decided to venture into the unknown and start an Internet based store first before we open a store front. With little computer savvy we have been able to create a web sight with a store and a blog. Without knowing much about this e-commerce thing it has been changing to come up with a thorough business plan. There is so many different factors that come into play. Sure it has been relatively easy to build a site, but how do you get the traffic? Its not as easy as putting up an open sign and having a grand opening add in the local newspaper. We do have advertising through google and bing, but what if you don’t have the right keywords? Social networking is a fast paced movement, but you have to find ways to keep the momentum going. Blogs are supposed to be a great way to generate interest, but what if you are not a good writer? Finding ways to generate the traffic is challenging, but it is even more challenging to have a person make a purchase. Most people shopping on the net are looking for a deal, or are just looking. Turning lookers into buyers is the most challenging part, and the most overlooked aspect of starting an e-commerce based store. We do have monthly give away deals, and low rate flat rate shipping. We keep our prices very comparable and carry good quality merchandise. I have grown a much deeper respect towards all the successful Internet based stores out their.
